MacKenzie bread for Shine
A recent Mackenzie bread ad for Shine agency looking through the beautiful Lindis valley.
Late last year I worked with the wonderful people at Shine agency on a few projects. This one was to create new imagery for Meadow fresh milks new packaging which ran in various print media and adshels.
Kids are always lots of fun to work with offering up lovely unexpected moments and a sparkle in the eye…
IPA Awards 2016
Just seen that I have been awarded two honorable mentions in the 2016 International Photography Awards.
Both are personal series I have done. “Rodeo cowboys” in Advertising Self Promotion and also a series of landscapes I shot in “Yangshou, China” In Nature Landscape.
Pretty stoked with that, thanks IPA!
Zyrtec with JWT New York
Earlier in the year I was commissioned by JWT New York to shoot a series of lifestyle images on a Zyrtec TVC/Stills campaign. It was a hectic six day schedule with a massive crew, talent galore and several locations. Shooting dawn till dusk we captured some magic moments and worked with a brilliant crew which made it all the more enjoyable. Such a great shoot!
Here’s few snippets from our day in the long grass with the purpose built children’s playground in the background.
Pro Gear interview
Recently I did an interview for Pro Gear’s monthly newsletter, this got me thinking about my journey as a photographer so far.
This was great; a little retrospect when moving forwards…
Pro Photographer Article
An article from the nice folks at Pro Photographer Magazine.
I recently spent a couple of days shooting some new work in the Desert rd plateau.
Thought I’d better test out the 4WD and get amongst it…..
Li River, China
A view of the Li River in Yangshou, China. This is the area of the river that is famous for being featured on the 20 Yuan note.
There is more to come in this series…. will post soon.
Came across this moment of magic the other day, light rays cutting through the morning fog.
Summer is definitely all about fun, getting outdoors and enjoying the beaches with some friends.
Having a laugh….
8th International Colour Awards
Its always nice to be recognized for your work so it was great to recently receive an Honorable Mention in the 8th International Colour Awards.
Happy to see my Skate image shot for Mountain Dew is still being recognized and appreciated along with a few of my other images which received Nominations.
All up pretty stoked!
I recently had the pleasure of meeting Ed Sheeran just before his gig at Vector Arena in Auckland.
He was refreshingly down to earth stopping to say hi to everyone and seemed genuinely happy to take time out just before he hit the stage.
No super star ego’s there, nice one Ed…
Onboard with IDC
What a great way to start the year. After a busy end to 2014 with heading up to Hong Kong and China the new year started with a bang and only got better.
The chance to be represented by IDC is fantastic and one that I jumped at when the opportunity arose. Its great to now be a part of this long standing well respected agency with Michele who brings a wealth of industry know how & a can do attitude.
Heres a link to the IDC website if you’d like to take a peek.
Mermaid makes it…
A little late to post this one but a quick update on how the Loupes finished up….
I managed to score second place in the Illustrative section with the Mermaid image, nice!
A special thanks to Milton Menzies and Rafael Vallaperde from Lightfarm studios for their amazing wizardry in making this image happen. Chur!
About this time last year I received a call that left me with a smile from ear to ear, I had won the Open Loupe awards! A bevy of prizes and loot not to mention a VIP trip to Hong Kong for Creative Asia and the newly formed CA+ events which I just returned from recently. I will talk about the trip in a post very soon but in the meantime it is Loupe awards time again.
Hoping for a repeat of last year was a tall order however I am pleased to announce that I have received awards for the three images I entered, Two Bronze and a Silver in the Advertising and Illustrative sections. The final roundup is yet to be announced but I thought I would share these in the meantime.
Prizes and trips are great (Actually really great!) but having your work recognized from international experts and peers is something special that always gives you that boost, a little self satisfaction and a moment to enjoy.
Thank you Loupes and its Judges!
Also a massive thank you to everyone who collaborated and worked on these images with me. Without you all these wouldn’t be possible so thank you!
BTS – Samsung Tablet
A peak Behind The Scenes from a recent series I shot for Samsung via Auckland Indie agency Republik.
This was not only a great client and agency to be working with but we were shooting on location…..On Auckland’s West coast…..My backyard…..Hooray for that!
I love the West coast, the Waitakeres, the Bush, the Beach, Fantastic! ………and we even managed to dodge the heavy rain that hit the rest of the city while we basked in the late evening sun.
Your a stunner West coast.
Capture Magazine Annual 2014
Its that time of year again, Christmas is nigh and Capture Magazine have rolled out their Annual showcase of the year that was.
Im happy to say I have been included in this years roundup with my Mermaid image making the Self Promotional section.
This is the second time I have been included in the Annual for self promotion and this is no less special than the first time, in fact it I think it is more so…
Self promotion is a phrase thats often thrown around, dropped into conversation and widely discussed in this industry. Without it I dare say we may drift into oblivion never to be seen again…..
Ok maybe not quite but it is an essential part in todays competitive environment.
It is this necessity to consistantly promote yourself that makes it all the more special to be recognized for this.
Thank you Capture Magazine, a great way to round up the year!
Heres some new work that Im really happy with, its for Speights environment fund. This is a great initiative setup by Speights to assist Otago not for profit environmental groups achieve their goals of preserving the pristine waterways and surrounding environment in the Otago area. For more information about this fund you can go to the “website“ where you can apply for funding etc.
Can you spot the bottle in the forest?
This image was commissioned by DDB and the ace retouch trickery is by Denny at Lightfarm studios.
The Ice Skater is an image I’ve had in mind for a while now and Im really happy with the final result. I love the serene feeling it has, the calmness and the quirk seeing her in this amazing landscape; outside the dull confines of a stark warehouse with ice in it.
A big thanks to Denny at lightfarm for the retouch/grade!
Heres a few new pictures I took of Anna and Courtney while I was down South recently on a road trip.
With only a short time frame to work with I thought a snow fight might be fun, the dog loved it…..

The making of a Mermaid
The making of Video for the Mermaid is finally out and gives a real insight into what it takes to create an image like this. The guys who put this video together at lightfarmbrasil.com are absolute geniuses at their craft, with their ability to seamlessly blend CGI and photography but also in creating these amazing videos. Take a look behind the scenes…
Thanks again to Milton Menzies and Rafael Vallaperde for making this happen.

Communication Arts Photography Annual 2014
I was recently contacted by Communication Arts that I had won entry into this years Photography Annual. It is a huge honor to be included in this prestigious Journal and is one of those high points you hope to achieve throughout your career. I have received so much inspiration over the years from my photography idols who have appeared in this annual to now find myself featured along side many of them is really a dream come true.
Communication Arts is now in its 56th year, the Skateboarding image which I shot for Mountain Dew was one of only 155 images to be selected for the 2014 edition. This will be available in June.
I can’t wait…
It is that time of year again and White studios are holding another group exhibition which I have a print in as part of the Auckland festival of Photography.
The exhibition is all personal work from some of New Zealand’s top commercial photographers so should be great to get along to and take a look.
Check it out, details below…
I was recently interviewed by Adrian Hatwell from the Photographers mail on winning the International Loupe awards and how the image came about.

Loupe Awards Open winner 2013
Boom I won!
Yeah thats right I was recently chosen as the professional Open Awards Winner of the prestigious 2013 International Loupe awards.
These awards are in there 6th year now and attract in excess of 4500 entries from over 100 different countries. The prizes are pretty damn awesome too with a sizable cash prize and a trip to Creative Asia in Hong Kong later this year which I can’t wait to attend.
My entry was in the Commercial Advertising and Fashion section where I scored gold from the Judges and won that category, this in itself was amazing so I was over the moon when I heard I had taken out the Open award also.
The news came a day after my birthday in late December which made for some great celebrations.
It has been a huge honor to receive this accolade judged by the best in the business from around the world and to follow in the footsteps of past high profile winners.
And of course the win, whoop whoop!
I love shooting underwater but its even better when deep sea Mermaids are involved. So when the idea was talked about with the guys at Lightfarm it was a perfect opportunity to collaborate and create this mystical ocean seascape where divers encounter the dangerous allure of the deep sea mermaid.
It was great working with such a pro team where so many elements had to seamlessley come together with the mix of CGI and Underwater imagery.
I think the final image offers a surreal glimpse into an undersea fantasy world, one with Mermaids waiting for the unsuspecting deep sea adventurer….
Special thanks to Lightfarm,
Denny Monk-Safety Diver
Here are some playful images to finish the year off with! They are from one of my recent diving trips to Vanuatu.
The local kids love jumping off this sea wall and couldn’t get enough of the camera. I could have stayed all day photographing them but the diving called…
Some of my work was recently featured on the cover of Ad Media for Skinny mobile.
They are currently running on Bus shelters, Bus backs and Billboards around the country.
Well its been a busy year so far so this is my first update in a while!
I will add some new posts over the next few days as to what I have been up to in 2013.
Starting with the most recent I think I will work backwards, it might help slow the year down…..
So this week Im part of a group exhibition at White studios in conjunction with the Auckland festival of Photography.
Loupe Awards 2012
The prestigious Loupe Awards 2012 is an international photography competition attracting professional photographers around the world.
So I am stoked to have been awarded a Bronze in the open Landscape category for the Valley image from my “Ultimate Rugby Playgrounds” series shot in the South Island of New Zealand. This image was also recently recognized in Capture magazines Self promo 2012 Annual which is mentioned in an earlier post of mine.
It is always great to get some positive feedback and affirmation of your work from industry peers who are the judges for these events.
Thanks Loupe awards!
Capture Magazine Self Promo
Just got my latest copy of Capture Magazines “The Annual” . Totally stoked to be featured in The Work “Self Promo” category.
A big thanks to the guys at Lightfarm who worked on this with me.
Ultimate Rugby playgrounds!
Here’s a cool new personal project I completed recently, using some of the landscape images I shot down south I decided to create the ultimate Rugby playgrounds. I got in touch with the guru’s at Lightfarm and set about shooting some real deal world cup rugby posts for the images. I couldn’t get the correct angle for the posts in the valley image but no problem the Lightfarm guys made me some CGI ones instead, wicked! As a conceptual set of landscape images Im really happy with these, massive thanks to the guys at Lightfarm as they did a great job and were brilliant to work with. Here’s a link to their website if you want to check them out www.lightfarmstudios.com
South Island Landscapes
I was lucky enough to take a trip down south recently to shoot some new Landscapes, what an amazing country we live in! Here is a small selection of images I shot…
I recently shot the stills for the new Freeview campaign alongside the TVC production. The talented Greg Page of Flying Fish directed the TVC’s with new indie agency True producing the campaign. We shot at flying fish’s new premises in Ponsonby which was great.. Here are a few behind the scenes shots from the day, it was a fun set to be on! Also a couple of the posters and Billboards that are currently running.
Fire Volunteer Project
Here is a sneak preview of some images from a personal project I have recently started with my local Volunteer Fire department. All of these guys have full time day jobs and give up there evenings and weekends to fight fires and help protect our communities. They are pretty amazing really and getting to know them has been a privilege. I will post images from time to time as I work though this ongoing project but might have to save some of the gem’s to show you all later sorry, everyone likes a surprise right? The images below are from there weekly training, its no walk in the park! Wait for the real deal….So please keep checking in on my progress with this, I’m pretty excited about what lies ahead and believe highlighting what these guys do will be a great thing for the Volunteer Brigade. If you like what you see feel free to drop me an email or send me a tweet @markcarterphoto!
Down side up?
Make my Movie comp..
Here is an image I made with the very talented Director Jeff Szusterman late last year for the Make My Movie competition. We had a lot of fun creating this image with his lovely daughter Olivia. Yes she does look a little disturbed in the final image which is what we were after but I can assure you she had lots of fun having her picture taken. I big thank you to Scott Nadin also for his brilliant post work on the image.
We didn’t win unfortunately but had a lot of fun working on the project.
Now on Viisual !!
Great to now be a part of the highly regarded international artist resource Viisual!
I feel privileged to be featured on this with many other talented photographers from around the world, take a look…..
Welcome to 2012, I hope everyone had a great Christmas and new year! Love the Christmas break period, one time of the year where you can truly kick back and relax without that little guilty feeling that you should really be doing some work! Weather hasn’t been much to write home about but when its good its been great. Here’s a couple of pics I shot on a walk out on the cliffs above our iconic west coast….
This is my first blog on my new website so where to begin?
Well it’s been a time of new things for me having recently left my position as Creative Director of Photography after three years at one of New Zealand’s leading ad agencies. It is time for change, to pursue new directions with my work and my life. It has been a massive move stepping back into the uncertain world of freelancing, but Im feeling better than ever and really looking forward to what is ahead. Not just the freedom I now have to focus on new areas of my work but also the time I can now spend with family and friends. A couple of weeks ago my dad called to see if I wanted to go up in a plane for the day, not just any plane though. A Catalina to be exact, the flying boat! Wow this plane is amazing, first built in the mid thirties and the only one left in the country and one of a handful left in the world today. What a buzz….the roar of the two huge engines was crazy and the view we had from the big bubble like rear windows was just spectacular! It was awesome to say the least…
I got to spend this time with my dad, had an amazing day, and did something I will remember for a long time to come.
So I thought I would start by sharing a few pictures from the day, enjoy….
